I started in thinking about this early when people talked about rumor that yahoo would buy digg. Yet my viewpoint there, was 100miles away from anything about the “GreenPeace”, but presented my opinion on the possibility and a slight analysis about Web2.0 service suite competition between the Big Band S. It should be concluded into the thinking on the competition field.

The day after the upper post, Steve Rubel, brought me a wide sight of the web2.0 companies, though I'm not sure whether he owns the authorship of figure. We played a guess game there about who will flop or be dumbest web2.0 company in the up coming 2006. I thought it should be interested peoples, so I made a digg about the game. Well, maybe I did not topiced the title cool enough, I got seldom fellows. And Luckly, I collected some comments from Steve. I noticed that people judged their forecast by focusing on the technique used by the website, such CSS, XHTML, Ajax, and Table, JAVA Script. I'm not a professional web developer in honest. I run biz myself, and I believe deeply that technique is never the best to protect your alive in the business battlefield, and you’re given no permission to win in the game by owning a lofty technology. Why geniuses fall? A reason for that is they force again the trend in which there’re even more geniuses. Today, we are living on a planet contain with more than 6 billion human lives, indeed, Einstein is not regarded as singularity resource. I'm not talking about technic is nothing but shit, contrarily technic is much important for the first step. But then you have to run with the trend, what google had done these days must proved me more........I'm sorry for being too much for this, one more sentence for concluding my points here. I respect the guys who being so brave to try to be Achilles then fight with Arthur's knight team, and will pray for their success heartily.

Yes, I know you may begin feel no hope that I will circle back to the title. I deduced “conformation”, the sharp of the web2.0 Internet from that day. I had told you how I wrote my blog previously. And posts from Mike and jzawodn leaded me to the checkpoint. Surprise you, but I have to say: today’s Internet maybe the largest garbage and ridiculous being in the world. It's nothing but a monster that licking up resources as cetacean and murdering human creations. I like Mike's cute style:

By my estimate, which is a conservative one, there has to be a separate blog "management" tool for every finger I have, plus a few toes too. Case in point, there are tools to:

I'm sure if listible will become a bright shinning web2.0 company or be another claw of the monster. At least, it drew a portrait for this Internet evil successfully. I pick one for your referrence here, "Online Calendars" which because I am seek a calendar for myself these days. Damn........ Can you image they list totally 17 website that provide this same service? Hay, come on, just a calendar, a table for marking down what you need to do at every future coming single moment, and checking back what you have done by the time slot that had gone with the wind. I try my best to find word for descripting the usage of it in order to make it seems acting an important role in our life. And I'm sure the actual number will be far from this since lisible being such a fresh startup. What the hell?

According the marketing theory, in the long run, every market becomes a two-brand race. The battle usually winds up between two major players, usually the old reliable and the newcomer. In a maturing industry, third place is a difficult position to be in. The customer believes that marketing is a battle of products. The kind of thinking keeps two brands on top. They must be the best, they’re the leaders. Then means there nearly be no chance for the ranked 17th provider to win in the calendar service market. Internet is the big market, and you can not divide it into pieces by geography as what you do in traditional market. Except for information is blocked factitiously that malfeasances in business competition appear, and that’s the only reason I think why Baidu.com could actually sweep Google in CHINA searching engine market. But Web2.0 is surely a world wild competition, so why they’re still here? And why they’re just wasting the Internet bandwidth, the GSR (A Model of Internet Core Routers Designed by Cisco) process, the Internet storage, the Internet domain/IP address, the funds, the human energy for paying attention on them one or twice; and the most valuable things they lost, their creative ideas in developing new service for Internet uses which means their opportunity cost; but they keep still? I think I have to explain the reason before a further discussion.

I hope I would make a curt explain from two totally separated theories, the Marketing and the Games. We look from the marketing first to look at why there’re still other search engine provider lives on degradation, even Google exist. Fist point, “If Google ranked the No.1, then who goes the second”? Give a surmise on what they’re thinking about. Whenever the leader is strong, there is an opportunity for a No.2 to turn the tables. In strength, there is weakness of the leader. The most effective way for competition must be discovering the essence of the leader and presenting the prospect with the opposite. For example, Google doesn’t provide mp3 search service officially, that’s why many people use Baidu.com instead of Google when want to search a mp3 song at here. Ok, try to protect our discussion away from debate of Copy Rights, least it’s a legal behavior in China. They try to be different not better. Some may present their products as the alternative to the leader. The first brand that captures the concept is often able to portray its competitors as “me too”. You always need a backup search engine for you right? No matter how strong is Google’s clustered server farm, remember the days before Google.CN is established? I pick Baidu.com up for sampling here because I really hate this site personally, for the duty ways it set Google up. If the Internet market would contain the maxims up to 2 or 3 search engine service providers, what they’re trying to be is the second. Yes, all of the strategies they performed on market are quite right; there isn’t yet an upcoming search engine be a alternative of Google significantly. But the time will come, when the younger brother is born, where will they go on else way?

If you think about in the game theory, the question goes to “Who Quite First”? A widely believed but ridicules alive philosophy for the dot com, the one who dead at the last, the one who had won all the passed. Competition between Web2.0 companies or between the company itself and their customers are just fix into Prisoner's dilemma then lead to Nash Equilibrium, which is a kind of optimal collective strategy in a game involving two or more players, where no player has anything to gain by changing only his or her own strategy. If each player has chosen a strategy and no player can benefit by changing his or her strategy while the other players keep theirs unchanged, then the current set of strategy choices and the corresponding payoffs constitute Nash equilibrium. What we’re talking about is calling for a more efficient and optimized Internet resources allocation, that lead to Pareto Optimality. But I’m afraid in the Prisoner's dilemma, and in the prisoner's dilemma, cooperating is strictly dominated by defecting. The unique or short term equilibrium for this game does not lead to a Pareto-optimal solution. That is, when two rational players both play defect even though the total reward (the sum of the reward received by the two players) would be greater if they both played cooperate. In equilibrium, each prisoner chooses to defect even though both would be better off by cooperating. This is the dilemma. So, who makes the break?

The answer gonna be “Everyone”, either be you or be the Web2.0 corp. We described the reason of Web2.0 companies’ strategy by separating into marketing and game theory (A subject being so close to economic). Now we keep the style to find the solution, sometimes I like to combine them both into one solution so that have a more consummate consideration. In the iterated prisoner's dilemma the game is played repeatedly. Thus each player has an opportunity to "punish" the other player for previous non-cooperative play. Cooperation may then arise as an equilibrium outcome. The incentive to cheat may then be overcome by the threat of punishment, leading to the possibility of a cooperative outcome. As the number of iterations approaches infinity, the Nash equilibrium tends to the Pareto optimum. Here’s some suggestion from marketing rules for the crops.

“It’s better to be first than it is to be better.” Create a category you can be first in. It’s much easier to get into the mind first than to try to convince customers you have a better product than the one that did hit there first. First brands tend to retain their leadership as the names often become generic. Regardless of reality, people perceive first products into the mind as superior. “If you can’t be first in a category, set up a new category you can be first in.” Launch a new product that answers the question “first what?” What category is this new product first in? If above can not be a strong push for them, which would be such obstinate as same as I supposed, it’s your turn now. Marketing constructed the modem economic theory, who is marketed for? That’s no one else but you.

Before executing the rights the market endow with us the consumer, review ourselves first. How many Email box does each of us have registered? How many of them you’re using on hold and how many you even forget the password, because you never use again? We post our blog, so how much bloggging space you have own? How many files you downloaded by BT or Edonkey but leave them alone, and one day you deleted them for disk clean up “uncarfully”? By my estimate, which is a conservative one, a web surfer who have touch the net since 3 to 5 years ago, probably just using less than 10% of the online service he or she has registered. That means the rest of 90% service won’t be the thing worthier than rubbish to you. Can we evolve a little further, when every single human being, who composes the Internet, has a proportion up to 90% junk data, then what this Internet will be? Well, so kind of you in calling it garbage, because I don’t think you still keep things that 90% of it is unusable. So what? They’re free. Cool, but you defected once, punish is coming, remember it I mentioned before in the part of prisoner's dilemma? Don’t think about how much you’re paying for the Internet right now, it’s an uncertainty variable control by ISPs, but focus on how many ways they have created to take charge on you these nearly years. Maybe not charged directly on you, but on you company which you’re working for and where your incoming source is. I like to talk about MPLS/VPN, QoS, OSPF with other because I’m really be professional on these topics. But I prefer there were not these kinds of layer 2 and layer 3 tag switching VPN, sequence algorism, and link state routing protocol exist ever. They come into our life, take back our money because our rapacity but none of our requirement. I begin to love on this little blue “CO” button on my firefox. I believe it’s a useful tool to advance the Internet comment quality, especially for the comment poster who share their comment on their own blog. A little comment on it, a more widely blog URL supported ability would make it a better one. Comments even on blogger sometimes may not support while the blogger set the comment to be post on a new opening window. How about make an incompatible blog site submit page on coComment? And as I know, the system only collect the comments from coComment members up to NOW. That means more widely serve capability is urgent for their beta server. Well, after all, it’s absolute an amazing web2.0 service and pray for its being more and more successful.

Maybe it's hard to imagine, there're places in the world where couldn't open blogspot in normal way. I’m not interested in explaining the reason why blogspot is blocked, but no matter you believe or not, here're some ways for browsing the blogspot, and I use cetamac.blogspot.com for illustrating here. Some ways are collected from internet, you maybe track the links to find out where these places are.

The best way always comes the first: No proxy, no third party soft, no blogger support, Google Language Tools (http://www.google.com/language_tools)

You can simply use google language tools for translation single word, sentence, or websites, but did you find out it's not only a translation tools, but also a high performance almighty proxy server. Try to do a translation again. Go to google language tools page, input a website address you wish to make translation in the "Translate a web page" tab, and select your translate pair. I used http://cetamac.blogspot.com here, from english to french. Then click the "Translate" button.

Then wait a minute, as you see below, cetamac.blogspot has been translated from english to french. What is a expecting Web2.0 Internet? It means a totally packaged service solution provided by one or two Big Bands, or distributed services on hundreds of single sites for users to customize their own service suite? I believe, comforming suite, but not distributing service will be web2.0 direction in the nearly future. And what the companies think of themselves? From the Big Bands sight, a conformation service will be main furture of a Web2.0 internet, by self development, by acquisition, or how about some kinds of OEM?

Read the news from Yahoo News several days ago, at the moment my reaction told this maybe my first standing oppositely with Google. Prisoner's dilemma, in Game Theory, is a type of Non Zero SUM Game in which two players try to get rewards from a banker by cooperating with or betraying the other player.

Since in any situation playing defect is more beneficial than cooperating, all rational players will play defect.

In any kind of the game, no matter what the strategy other player choose, if a player still have a better strategy to choose for a better payment, then we have to say the strategy he chose is Strictly Inferior. Because he made violation for the fundamental purpose of the game, to maximize his individual returns in playing the game, as we talked earlier before. A rational player will never choose a Strictly Inferior strategy. In prisoner's dilemma, defecting makes cooperating being a Strictly Inferior strategy. So the only possible equilibrium for the game is for all players to defect. In simpler terms, no matter what the other player does, one player will always get a greater payoff by playing defect. Since in any situation playing defect is more beneficial than cooperating, all rational players will play defect. The unique equilibrium for this game does not lead to a Pareto-optimal solution, which means all player involved in the game will play defect.

Let me explain a little more detail here. There’s conflict exist between the TOTAL REWARDS and PERSONAL REWARDS while choosing a cooperating or defecting solution. In a both side cooperating solution, the may maximize their total rewards, but the point is it’s not an averagely allocation for every single player. Thought we mentioned the concept of “Strictly Inferior”, which make players defecting so that he received a greater payment from it. And if you integrate psychology into our game theory, an unbalanced allocation is the root of defecting. People care about how much the other gets, more than how much he has been paid actually.

We assume the total reward goes to be 10 in this cooperating solution, and then we suppose the allocation proportion goes to be an unequal 4:6. Then the player paid 4 would choose to defect, maybe 5 for his defecting. After del.icio.us and flickr, public are guessing what is Yahoo's next acquisition target to conform it's Web2.0 Super Suit. And now there's rumor that Yahoo Will Buy Digg.

If Digg continues on this pace they're going to need Yahoo's help scaling the site as hardware alone should become a major expense. With Delicious, Digg, Flickr and related services, Yahoo seems willing to do whatever it takes to 'own' Web 2.0.

Though Digg blog officially denies this acquisition. I still believe yahoo will keep on conforming it's Web2.0 Super Suit by acquisition. Yet there're still other players providing familar services as Digg, such as Reddit, and TailRank. Further more, I don't think that Digg, a new site and still using Googel adsence as one of their incoming sources, would really deny Yahoo's acquisition, all they posted on blog are just negotiation artifice for a better sales price. It's not so interested for a deeper researching.

For the Web2.0 leading competition between Yahoo and Google may attract more. They're both conforming it's own Web2.0 SuperSuite to look for winning the standard establishment station. It seems Yahoo leads the race before Google, but Yahoo conform resources by acquisition should put in consideration. And Google make the suite mostly based on development (Google Lab) and confederation (Firefox). And we used to hear about Google fans but seldom about Yahoo fans. All about the Years, Early Days in S21

Yah, time is limited, and I have to speed up this track record for the old memories. I delayed several days at home to finish this, and it has to be done because memories are assets that increase its value as the time goes by, but easy to lose if you don’t mark it down. By the other side, and it has to be finished soon too, because man doesn’t live in memories. We’re live in current, expecting for the future, and enjoying in our memory collections.

The early days in S21 may be the most importance in my last 25 years. It changed me much. I admit I a person with planning, everything should be under management, or I would feel frailest. Confirmation, yes, tag of my life. I nurtured this habit, because too much in life is out of what you planned before. Unimaginable situation come into your handling any time, such as my trip to S21. I don’t remember why I chose for it, maybe I’ve never thought about why not. I like that city when I’m so young, but it’s regretful I hate there right now. I didn’t plan what exactly I will get there, and what I may meet there. The only thing I planned before I go through the boarding gate is planning to stay about half of year, and I come back my hometown after 2 year later. Anything else? Just follow the stream of destiny. My friends think I get successful in S21, I agree with them mostly. But what I want to explain is I’ve never image of this. No planning, no expecting and even no courage because I know nothing to scare, is contained in it. I setup the G20 branch and a steady-going around 50,000 sales for the company that time. Remove NavBar and Keep Blog Searching

Blogger Template posted a tips to remove the Blogger NavBar on the top of the blog which really makes me feeling oppression. To hide the Blogger NavBar, just paste the code between "style" tags that can be easily found near the top of your template source:

I make the same action and as you see, it has gone! And I can even feel the fresh air are breathing into my blog now, could you? Yet, I miss the NavBar since it provide a search function tab for my blog, and it performed much better and more accurate than sitesearch did. I'm just thinking of reserving this for my blog. So I customize the NavBar and re-put it into the blog template, as it can be seen on the slide bar. Try to use the "Search CetaMac'S" box, isn't the searching result just as what NavBar used to be? Yup, insert the following script into yours. Don't forget to change the value "cetamac.blogspot.com" into the address of your blog.

In dial-related applications, PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) is the most commonly used encapsulation type. PPP allows two machines on a p2p communication link to negotiate various parameters for authentication, compression, and the Layer 3 (L3) protocols, such as IP. A failure in the PPP negotiation between two routers causes the connection to fail.

PPP negotiation between two peers cannot start unless the lower layer (ISDN, physical interface, dial-up line, and so on) under PPP functions perfectly. For example, if you want to run PPP over ISDN, then all ISDN layers must be up; otherwise PPP does not start.

The debug ppp negotiation command enables you to view the PPP negotiation transactions, identify the problem or stage when the error occurs, and develop a resolution. So, it is imperative that you understand the debug ppp negotiation command output.

Phases of PPP Negotiation:

LCP (Mandatory Phase):

LCP is a phase in which parameters to establish, configure, and test the data-link connection are negotiated. An LCP state of open means that LCP was successfully completed, while an LCP state of closed indicates an LCP failure.

Output Field Explain:
Pay Attention for it, most of the other debug command are in a similar formation.

The timestamp—Millisecond timestamps are useful.
Interface and Interface number—This field is useful when debug connections use multiple connections, or when the connection transitions through several interfaces. For example, certain connections (such as multilink calls) are controlled by the physical interface at the beginning,but are later controlled by the dialer interface or virtual-access interface.
Type of PPP message—This field indicates whether the line is a general PPP, LCP, CHAP, PAP, or IPCP message.
Direction of the message—An I indicates an incoming packet, and an O indicates an outgoing packet. This field can be used to determine if the message was generated or received by the router.
Message—This field includes the particular transaction under negotiation.
ID—This field is used to match and coordinate request messages to the appropriate response messages. You can use the ID field to associate a response with an incoming message. This option is especially useful when the incoming message and the response are far apart in the debug output.
Length—The length field defines the length of the information field. This field is not important for general troubleshooting.

To display debugging information about the creation and deletion of dynamic dialer maps, use the debug dialer map command to track large-scale dialout (LSDO) and incoming calls that use dynamic dialer maps. This command shows the whole trace including when the map is created and removed.

If an interface is configured for dial-on-demand routing (DDR), and a map to a specified address does not exist, then a dynamic dialer map is created and when the call disconnects, the dialer map is removed.

Note: Do not configure a dialer string or a dialer map on the incoming interface.

I knew my last girlfriend Karman when I’m on the college, grade 2. She acted as the most important woman in my early life, about 3 years before Nov. 2003. And no matter what to be talking about; she connected everything in that period. She’s some kind of the girl I like to stay with, and some kind of the girl who filled my memory with sweet. Though maybe unhappiess was more in praxis.

I could not help myself in escaping from the very moment at the way she woke me up. I’m sure you’ll laugh out and feel lucky to own such a lovely girlfriend as me, when you find it out. There’s one time, while I was still sleeping and enjoying my dream, all things what I saw are the dreaming frames. But suddenly, the frames lost, and whole of my eye was filled with another big and dark shining eye! Oh, I remembered that must be Karman’s eyes, she always woke up before I did. But, why I could see nothing else but her eyes in the dream, in such a wide screen? I tried to open both of my eyes; do you know what I saw? Karman was propping up my eye by her finger, and covering her eye on mine! I wasn’t in dream right now. I asked her why. She told me that when I was dreaming, she saw my eyes was turning from left to right, and up to down, she’s curiously wanted to know what I was dreaming about. That’s all why she opened my eye. It’s lucky that she didn’t realize the dreams are generate by my brain but not the eyes at the moment, I’m not sure she would open my skull if she did. :)

Yes, all my memory thought that every day with her was honey moon day. She has the magic that can easily emblaze every single boring day, by a small motion, a simple word, and an expression in her eyes on me. We rented a house not far from our university that time. My part-time job earned around 1,500 to 2,000 per month; but we didn’t get enough money for hiring tax home, or even a motor. Usually, we take a bus two or three stops went home. Our first property is a National automatic washing machine and a water heater, which cost more than 1,500 in all. With other spending, we had to plan the meal cost. We arranged that go to restaurant once a week, and snacked in the other days. Yes, under Karman’s scheme, we saved 10,000 in bank for wedding later, at least I was thinking in this way. I didn’t need to work every night, when I stay at home, I would buy snack and wait for her coming back from school, and then we have our supper together. The food was cook in greasiness, a frequent comportment between us are gluing our two oily lips together. Ha, it was sucks, but we were feeling treacle in it. And when I went out for work, she would clean the house before I back home. Every night, we talked about the whole day, I sometimes brought beer and play games with her. I remember the game we play most named “Being Richest under the sky, three”. And we placed a cushion in front of the kitchen room, marked “home, sweet home”. It was a little noise at night, dogs shouted and our there’s a open air tiny dining-room under our house, the customer in the dinning-room often eat so late to break in on our sleeping. She got angry for this sometime, and I would gently flap her back to make her sleep again. So much fragment in my memory and they build my happiest days in our college time.

After graduate, she became an entertainment journalist for one of the biggest newspaper in our city, G20, and earning 5,000 or maybe more per month. And I start to setup my company. It’s hard to log all what we’ve done in that 3 years, from 2001 to 2003. She left me before our 3 years commemorating day, the third month I arrived S21, in telephone. We phone several times later, but haven’t sawn each other after that, up to now.

I wrote this topic before, but it is interrupted by some reasons. Well, I’ve though about writing with some other one together with whom I share most of this exciting and unforgettable memories. Ha, time changed, just as man’s characters and relationships. In the circumstances, I rewrite this myself. Yes, I’ve to learn to face and handle everything by oneself first, and then I could call up others to build the team. Otherwise, there’s no one would lie on me.

I felt so lucky the last several years before 2004. I earned my first 10,000 when I was still in the college; I became one of the top technical instructors when I was 22; I cannot wait to setup my owned company before graduate; I then found the branch in a totally unacquainted city all by myself. After 18 months, when I leave it, the branch has become the regional leader in the biz area. Except for the fortune, I though I climbed to the top of the life.

However, the 2005; it has been a tough year for me. I was traded out and I broke away from the company I setup. And I leave the city where I earned my first bucket of gold, much more than the standard in universalism. I tried to setup another company in another field, but just met stagnancy. I have to say: I am hurt, so completely. I left no more than 3,000 in the neap period, in the habitual but still strange city. Yeah, thanks for my affectionate wife stay with me to counterwork with the life. And I think about this guy:

I started to doubt if it’s the end of luck, or just like an old friend said: one blow will tumble you for years. I remember these words in deep of my heart. That’s why I keep walking even achieved my elementary ambition when others cannot believe I made it in such age. I told myself getting more and working harder in my days, so I will get deposit in adversity. The question gonna to 2005 was really the corner for me?

Ha… Of course not, did you recently see the Reebok’s advertisement acted by Iverson? Ah, how long we’ve forgot this brand? And how long it has been, when we though about the sports article, only Nick and Adidas would come into our mind. Now, Reebok come back, with being beaten black and blue. Ha, I judged from the advertisement. Yes, black and blue or red and green is not the point, the point is even being beaten black, blue, red and green, it still comes back to us. It rises to its feet again.

What I wanna share with you is a online blogging tools: Writely that introduced by Steve. Maybe most of you are same with me in seeking for a good blogging tools. I’ve tried blogger, blogger for word, performancing, and Qumana (I found it from my Google Ads). Well I should say all of them are excellent to be a blogging tools, both online or offline. And they have a nice looking user interface that encourages you to keep writing and updating your blog. It’s surely a important element for a rocket blogger such as me. You could easily find their pros as soon as you take a try for one of them. But I would like to share some drawbacks with you here:

Blogger: Easy to use and a one button blogging, but it’s a nightmare if you post image on your blog after you finishing you text edition.

Blogger for Word: Integrate all Microsoft word’s editing function including formation turning, spell and grammar checking. But it’s indescribable that it doesn’t support image and table. Something more, it makes lots of HTML rubbish in the post.

Performancing: Good and great if you need image inserting to your post! What a pity I found no where to modify font type and set font size by pounds.

I need a one stop blogging tools but what I’m doing is write a draft by word, then paste to notepad for filtering the HTML rubbish. Then, paste to performancing to insert figures, and publish my post to blogger. It’s not the end, remember that performancing cannot modify font type, I have to login to blogger.com again, and using the online blogger editor to set my favorite Trebuchet MS font type. Can you believe I use more than 4 tools to publish every single post in my blog?

OK, here comes Writely, the main different from the blogging tools above, Writely is an online blogging tools and you could ask another to edit the post for you before you post to the public.

And the post won't be deleted but stay on Writely's website for your further modify. That means I can blog even my notepad is not on hand. And the most amazing feature for me is the "Undo last edit" tab! It's the only online blogging tools I've ever seen that contain this function by a realtime caching mechanism. Though the spell checking is not as stronge as word that provides abundant recorrect suggestions.

How to create a RJ-45 loopback adapter

When testing a router that has not been cabled to the network, it is possible to build a loopback adapter out of a single RJ-45 connector and some wire. I recommend that every networker carry one or two of these beasties with you at all times. They come in handy for servers as well.

With the pins facing towards you and starting from the left, the pins on an RJ-45 jack are numbered from 1 to 8. You will need two very short pieces of wire.

1. Wire pin 1 to pin 3.
1. Wire pin 2 to pin 6.

Do not wire any of the other pins.

You are done! Ensure that you have a good crimp on the wires.

Yeah, here comes to the most common problem when deploying OSPF on a WAN network which using dialing technique.

-- Why doesn't OSPF form adjacency on a PRI, BRI, or dialer interface; and stuck on "EXSTART" state?

Designing OSPF to run on a temporary line will be an utterly catastrophic challenge to network engineers. And totally is a silly choice. I am fed up with solving my customers' network problems which due to the loathsome designing. Besides this P2P network type may lead to OSPF neighborship failure, ip ospf demand-circuit absolute a self-deceiving solution. It solve one problem by creating another, which drop OSPF network into terrible flapping. I like the words from Sam Halabi most: We deploy routing protocols because the network needs one, but not to show off our skill. The best routing protocol to be chosen is the routing protocol that fits the network infrastructure. We use a dialing layer-2 infrastructure ten to one goes to we are using it as a backup line. That's why I always recommend my customers using a static route on the dialing router instead of a dynamic routing protocol.

Let's look at the devil closely. And because we're talking debug ip ospf adj today, we may just observe the half face of it, the other half which come from ip ospf demand-circuit will be talked later next time.

The OSPF network-type on Primary Rate Interface (PRI), Basic Rate Interface (BRI), and dialer interfaces is point-to-point, which means that an interface can't form adjacency with more than one neighbor. A common problem when a PRI, BRI, or dialer interfaces try to form an OSPF adjacency is the neighbor gets stuck in the exstart/exchange process.

Let's look at an example:

Lines 1 - 3: RTR-B sends the first DBD to 3.3.3.2 (RTR-A) with seq 0xB41 and receives the first DBD from 3.3.3.2 (RTR-A) with seq# 0x1D06. Neighbor negotiation is still not complete.

Lines 4 - 6: RTR-B receives a reply from 3.3.3.2 (RTR-A) indicating that RTR-A received RTR-B's first DBD. Since RTR-B has the higher router ID, RTR-A elects itself slave. After receiving the acknowledgement from RTR-A, RTR-B declares itself master and sends the first DBD with data in it. Note the sequence number, which is 0xB42. Since RTR-B is the master, only it can increment the sequence number.

Line 7: RTR-B requests data from RTR-A since RTR-A indicated it has more data to send (flag set to 0x2 in last DBD received from RTR-A).

Line 8: RTR-B sends a link-state request packet to 3.3.3.2 (RTR-A). This is an OSPF packet type 3. This packet is usually sent to the neighbor's IP address. In this case, the neighbor's IP address is its router ID.

Lines 9 - 11: RTR-B receives a reply from slave (RTR-A) with a completely different sequence number and a flag of 0x7, which is the init flag. This DBD was intended for another router (most likely RTR-C), but RTR-B incorrectly received it. RTR-B declares there is a discrepancy because a flag of 0x7 means the slave has changed its status to master by setting the MS (Master/Slave) bit during the adjacency exchange. RTR-B also complains about the sequence number because it's out of order. The slave should always follow the master's sequence number.

Line 12: RTR-B re-initializes the adjacency by sending the first DBD to 3.3.3.2 to re-elect master and slave.

Lines 13 - 14: RTR-B receives a DBD from 3.3.3.2 (RTR-A), indicating that it's a slave, without recognizing RTR-B's sequence number. RTR-B declares that it doesn't recognize this DBD since the master and slave negotiation is not complete yet. This DBD packet was intended for another router.

Line 15: RTR-B receives a reply from 3.3.3.2 (RTR-A) for the old DBD, but it's too late because RTR-B has already re-initialized the adjacency process.

Line 16: RTR-B fails to recognize this DBD because it is for an "old" adjacency, which RTR-B has already torn down.

This process will repeat endlessly.

The solution? The best solution should always be trying to change OSPF into static route.

OSPF sends a multicast packet for a point-to-point network-type even after the interface achieves the 2-way state. Since RTR-A is trying to form adjacencies with both RTR-B and RTR-C, RTR-B receives DBD packets meant for RTR-C and RTR-C receives DBD packets meant for RTR-B.

To solve this problem, change the network type on all routers to point-to-multipoint. This changes the behavior of OSPF to send unicast packets after the 2-way state. Now RTR-B receives only packets destined for itself and RTR-C receives packets destined for itself. Changing the network-type in this way ensures that the OSPF router will form adjacency on a PRI, BRI, or dialer interface.

To change the network-type, enter the following configuration commands. We'll change RTR-B as an example.

Now if we look at the show commands for RTR-B, we can verify that the network-type is point-to-multipoint and the state is full.

We talk about something more about MD5 authentication in this very beginning:

MD5 authentication provides higher security than plain text authentication. This method uses the MD5 algorithm to compute a hash value from the contents of the OSPF packet and a password (or key). This hash value is transmitted in the packet, along with a key ID and a non-decreasing sequence number. The receiver, which knows the same password, calculates its own hash value. If nothing in the message has changed, the receiver's hash value should match the sender's hash value which is transmitted with the message.

The key ID allows the routers to reference multiple passwords. This makes password migration easier and more secure. For example, to migrate from one password to another, configure a password under a different key ID and remove the first key.

The sequence number prevents replay attacks, in which OSPF packets are captured, modified, and retransmitted to a router. As with plain text authentication, MD5 authentication passwords do not have to be the same throughout an area. However, they do need to be the same between neighbors.

To display information on OSPF-related events, such as adjacencies, flooding information, designated router selection, and shortest path first (SPF) calculation, use the debug ip ospf events command in privileged EXEC mode.

Pay attention to the "received" and "configured" parameters, they must be accurately match with each others. "Received" means the parameter that you are receiving from your neighbor, and "Configured" means the parameter that you are configuring on your router (the debugging router). It's a useful command for you to find out the OSPF neighborship establishing problems by comparing if the parameters between "received" and "configured" are matched. If not, a neighborship will never up between these routers

The debug ip ospf events output shown might appear if any of the following situations occurs:

The IP subnet masks for routers on the same network do not match.
The OSPF hello interval for the router does not match that configured for a neighbor.
The OSPF dead interval for the router does not match that configured for a neighbor.

If a router configured for OSPF routing is not seeing an OSPF neighbor on an attached network, perform the following tasks:

Make sure that both routers have been configured with the same IP mask, OSPF hello interval, and OSPF dead interval.
Make sure that both neighbors are part of the same area type.

In the following example line, the neighbor and this router are not part of a stub area (that is, one is a part of a transit area and the other is a part of a stub area, as explained in RFC 1247)

I have collected debugging outputs and tried to descript what it means and what evens it shows is operating on the network since 2 years ago. I think as an expert level network troubleshooter, you need to find out where the problem is, but also tell your client why the network is operating abnormally. Some engineers, I am not talking about the common networkers, what I am talking about including a large amount of CCIE which means the expert level engineers, they totally understand nothing about how to use debug command on routers and switches, or how to use this information to enhance their troubleshooting skills. I am thinking unsafe to run my business upon networks that established by these "experts". I hope they read my post and be more professional to their work.

WebLeOn's Blog, a site blogged by a widely online service researcher, and I enjoy the site much, updated an online services for publice these days -- MyStickies. By the extension, you can post your memo tips on your firefox screen, just as what we used to do on U'r computer's monitor. While the memo will be automatically save on your account page yet ash can, for later reviewing.

It attracted me by the screenshot, and had a try for it. Maybe it should make advanced on how memos would be save on the screen even the broswer windows are closed. Or how about makeing a cache for reloading the memo on screen next time user loads the same page? I believe there won't be more to login then review the memo tags again. Sharing machanism will be another challenge for it. User can easily carry out tags, notes, online post, and sharing by del.icio.us. Keeping the a spot of selling points on a memo tab modality, and playing jugglery on web 2.0 concept, maybe they won't go long. I removed the ware after 3 hours.

Blogging looks like a great new challenge to me; and I’ve to learn all things from the totally beginning. I don’t even know what’re del.icio.us, trackback links, and tags, and what RSS is doing extra, before Dec. last year. Now here Steve Rubel brings me another new element in blogger’s world, they’d like to call it Technorati. Ha, it’s no doubt that blogger lives in a different space from the others; even they’re sharing a same resource – the internet. It’s comprehensible that although I maintain the internet, oob, maybe part of it as a networker, but never pay much attentions on what data traffics are sending over the network, and what people are doing or even making money with these traffics. Just as an architect who never knows what business people are doing right on the edifice built by him. Different working spaces, different worlds.

But I try to realize the blogger’s world as you see. There’s no way better than become one of them when you try to understand something, so I become a blogger, a blogger “beta” may more appropriate for me right now. And you found I’m doing not bad, right?

Maybe we should learn to find blessedness in a simple victory all over again. To me, I loved MU ever since the time of KING Cantona, and victory is not the reason I love MU so much, nor BECK either. And I believe 90% of the MU fans love MU because they can see a "Never Give Up" spirit on the players. Have they lost the tradition now? From the match beaten by Man City, the last goal by Man City, I believe so. Or even earlier, the match in Portugal. It hurt me the most.

RED Evil will never be a real RED Evil unless the "Never Give Up" spirit come back, it make them as grisly as Evil before their competitors. When will it come back? May be next match, or next season? Or maybe right here from the match we smooth Liverpool at the last minute.

Is it making guys anxious or being gratified for such a laborious BSP? By the same way, del.icio.us has made several emergency maintenances in these few days. Ceta.Mac is new for blog*spot and del.icio.us, but I love them both in a short time, and hoping their service being steady. I’m afraid I have not enough free time to care for my blog, and keep backing it up.

news.com issued that google may replace Vodafone to be the new sponor of Manchester United, the greatest soccer club of the world. The biggest searching engine go with the biggest club, would they really come together and become the next big couple in Britain?

Well I'm personally expecting the sponsorship come ture, and united both brand I love most together. That must be fantastic to combine MU and Google.

Vodafone announced that it is ending its four-year deal to have its logo on the British soccer club's shirts even if only half the time specified in the contract has passed. According to Vodafone, at the end of the current soccer season the contract between the mobile operator and the soccer club will also end.

But the club's new owners, the US-based Glazer family, who won their controversial £800m takeover bid earlier this year, are now believed to be in advanced talks with some of the biggest global brands - many of them from the high-tech industry - about replacing Vodafone.

The Vodafone contract involved sums up to $15.5 million; the bidders interested in this "partnership" and willing to offer a huge amount of money are Google, IBM and Yahoo, according to a report this weekend in British newspaper The Observer.

The paper, citing City sources, said the Vodafone brand is not well known in the US and the termination of the deal gives the Glazer family the opportunity to bag a bigger global brand that will help give Manchester United a higher profile in the US.

Some of the other non-tech brands believed to be in talks with the football club include Coca-Cola and Levi Strauss.

It’s interesting when ISPs are talking about how to decrease the influence and slowdown the speed of Bit Torrent, maybe other peer to peer downloading technologies such as Gnutella, eDonkey are involved, from their network. Denying any traffic generated by all P2P soft gonna be the best choice for them, but it’s not the trend or sensible solution, right? Yet Alberto-Escarlate wrote an article which talking about How to configure routers to allow fast BitTorrent downloads on thep2pweblog.

I wanna to blog this page long time before. Since I’m a BT user but at the same time provide performance optimization solutions for ISPs, it seems a bit awkward for me at this position. It’s lucky for me to obtain inspiration from Opinmind, a site at where you can search positive and negative opinion for a same thing. So I make it in an “Opinmind Style” and post both positive and negative alternative ways to manage the BT traffics.

Now here comes how to decrease the BT traffics, I’d like you to know this as “manage” to be more appropriate. We usually use a NBAR to manage network traffics.

Procedure: CEF should be enabled and download PDLM for Bit Torrent from Cisco to your TFTP server, this example I illustrate here has been connected to a TFTP server with an IP address with 192.168.1.1

1.) Copy the PDLM into the router's flash:

Basically, within the policy-map bittorrent-policy, the action for any packets matching that protocol arriving on the fa0/1 interface was to DROP them. Packet manipulation is possible by setting the precedence bits, etc for further processing down the line. But in this instance, the packets are set to be dropped as soon as they arrive on the fa0/1 interface.

NBAR functioned on how to action packets that matches the protocol criteria required. It has its niche within the QoS crowd where specific applications are given precedence or not as the case maybe depending on the network requirements at the time of the implementation. NBAR allows recognition of a wide variety of applications where QoS may be implemented on them, i.e. from the bandwidth intensive Citrix to the port changing Kazaa application.

NBAR allows the classification of protocols from layer 4 to 7 hence allowing the router in some respects to disregard its layer 3 positions and to look at the high layer protocols. NBAR can recognize:
-- Statically assigned TCP and UDP port numbers
-- Non-UDP and non-TCP IP protocols
-- Dynamically assigned TCP and UDP port numbers. Classification of such applications requires stateful inspection; that is, the ability to discover the data connections to be classified by parsing the connections where the port assignments are made.
-- Sub-port classification or classification based on deep packet inspection; that is, classification by looking deeper into the packet.

NBAR can classify static port protocols. Although access control lists (ACLs) can also be used for this purpose, NBAR is easier to configure and can provide classification statistics that are not available when using ACLs.

NBAR includes a Protocol Discovery feature that provides an easy way to discover application protocols that are transferring an interface. The Protocol Discovery feature discovers any protocol traffic supported by NBAR. Protocol Discovery maintains the following per-protocol statistics for enabled interfaces: total number of input and output packets and bytes, and input and output bit rates. The Protocol Discovery feature captures key statistics associated with each protocol in a network that can be used to define traffic classes and QoS policies for each traffic class.

The router (depending on model and IOS version) has built-in in NBAR functionality which may be seen when configuring NBAR:

PDLM for NBAR

An external Packet Description Language Module (PDLM) can be loaded at any time to extend the NBAR list of recognized protocols. PDLMs can also be used to enhance an existing protocol recognition capability. PDLMs allow NBAR to recognize new protocols without requiring a new Cisco IOS image or a router reload, hence PDLMs allow the router to gain the functionality of recognizing applications at the application layer for the protocols which when the router was shipped, was either not available or have changed in its function so much that an update is required.

There are a number of examples, such as Citrix, Skype, Bittorrent, eDonkey, etc. This type of traffic would have been hard to classify using standard QoS techniques, either to minimize the impact of such programs on bandwidth, to drop them or to allocate the most amount of bandwidth to. PDLMs give the router this added ability to recognize the traffic specified by it as well as some other types of traffic pre-defined in the IOS.

My previous post talked about the other ways for browsing blogspot. Then I found abnormal to access this page, even cannot connect to my feed on feedburner. Everytime I tried to access my blog, the browser reported an error that "Connection to the server has been reseted". So I make a troubleshooting by feedburner today, when I check for the links in my blog pages and find that the link to download Ultrasurf is Enclosured. So I deleted the link and everything got right!

I'm sorry for deleting the download link from it, but I think you can find it by google easily.

Investment by 2006 Eve

Up to now, I find three projects to be invested in 2006.

1. Training project signed with “GC” & “HBM” Last year, which continued thought the year round. What I’ll get from the project are the following:

-- Experiences in running a totally self control project for such Wally customers and partners. I used to act as an onsite trainer in previous training projects, but this time I assign the role to other talent trainers and act as a sales, project manager and business negotiator. It’s a totally new experience for me, not only require focusing the quality in training, but also the more important – handling and response for the cash flow. I made some mistakes and at the same time collected a great rule in doing business during the process, which I call it “To make a good deal, but not only a good selling”. I hope to share with you guys in my later posts.
-- Marked my name in the market. I’ve been great or even superlative in technique training field for the pass 3 years indeed. And I’ve got respect and praise from every one of my trainees too. But as you maybe know, marking your name in the market is another area of marking only in your trainees. One is on a personal level, and one is on a business level. I cherish with the friendship and relationship that established between each of my adorable students and me. And if I choose training as the way in running my business, then I have to expand the relationships to another area.
-- Cash margin for my company, of course. This contact leads 6 months long, as I mentioned before, mistakes making by me lead the margin drop to around 13%. Cash proceeds may be less than 5%. It maybe a galling deal to others, that why I announce it on this low-level order.
-- Another new contact from the same client and partner this year is coming nearly in months. I’m not 100% sure I will sign for this, but man is living upon expectation, isn’t? By then, I have to recount the challenge, time, and risk again, but apparently, its insignificance talking deeper here by now.

So, what’s the challenge? --
A 0.036m payment is waiting to be liquidated these few days. And I’m looking forward to dividing the bill into two pieces in paying process. Yes, I do. I will finish the payment as my first investment this year.

2. New operation for my business. I will try to find chances in the ASP market in 2006. Yes, it’s a misty model here. I still have no idea about the invest budget yet, because before doing this, I have to rebuild my team in this project. I hope it won’t surprise you if I tell you I am not very clear what an ASP have to do. Ha, the only thing I am thinking about is the IT outsourcing trend.

3. Building certification organization. Yes, the toughest one. But, adhere to the sequence; let’s talk about what I’ll get from the project first:

-- High self-fulfillment and self-identity. Why do we still need a certificate after training? Because we’re lacking of confidence, I straight out ultimate reason here. Can anybody suffice to judge on me if I’m full of confidence? That’s no one. Certification, degree, and qualification, they promote you nothing but psychology significance value. They are just entirely imaginary in substance, have ever heard of any qualification in being a certification organization? If you really heard about it, that must be the capability in their training system which can upgrade one’s ability substantially, but not certification itself. But there is someone who garble these two terms craftily. They mark themselves as a certification organization but never provide eligible training for the trainees. Sharp-cut inverse materials are the universities and education system in some country. They received huge bankroll from the country, and tuition fee from students in various ways. But never provide eligible education for the academician, all they’ve done is certification. Then millions of college graduate with certificate come into being, while which means millions of HR market vagrant have come out. All I want to do is make a little change of this complexion.
-- It accord with the marketing law. “It’s better to be first than it is to be better”. “If you can’t be first in a category, set up a new category you can be first in”. “The most powerful concept in marketing owns a word in the prospect’s mind.”

Then talk about the challenge.
-- The most challenge me is the team member. I don’t think we can get common consciousness in business and corporation. Doing a tough work with guys who cannot be identified with, it seems nothing know from a road which direct to hell.
-- I’m not sure if I have enough time and energy to handle the ASP project at the same time. And I know both may failed if neither is doing in full spirit.

Planning for 2006

It’s time to plan my new investment next year; I used to count the New Year in our own convention, when begins from the Jan 28th this year. It’s not a constant so that we need to re-count the New Year’s Eve in 2007. Ha, it’s not the point.

Make the target clear; it’s the most important coming first, no matter how big the bonuses I will win, or challenges I may face to. It will be suffering if you let both of them be blurry. It’s anguished enough when you’re not sure how much you will be redounded upon conquering the challenges; say nothing of your lean cognition about what you’re going to face indeed. It seems the fortune's wheel is twiddling with you, and challenging you time and time again with hopeless. But who runs your fortune’s wheel? It’s no one else but you. You chose the bonuses first, and then have to face the challenges. There won’t be any challenges as soon as you give up the bonuses you’re expecting. You know what I mean now? So change your focus from the challenge to the chance, asked yourself would you really hope that thing first, and then find the way to reach that point. Telling yourself how long you will work for it comes for the follow. Calculate the challenge, risk, and cost you may be charged with at the last step.

By this moment, you find what you want, how to achieve, how long it will last for, and how much you will pay for it. Ask yourself again if you still want to be even though. Choose your answer. “Yes?” Keep on doing it, and you should not complain about the destiny, you chose it. “No?” give it up, challenges will never appear. Don’t confuse the sequence and neglect your right of choice. Choice is the most distinguished, uncommon rights for a human being. We own our destiny because we choose; we lost our destiny because we’re chosen by others. It’s absolutely what we are strive for all our life.

My previous post talked about the best way for browsing blogspot.com, I believe once you find the best way, you won’t try the others any more. But here, I still provide several methods collected from the other sites for you to review. I personally combine different ways simultaneity, because all of them is using proxy browsing for core technique, the most two challenges for a proxy browsing are synchronization with the original and server availability; I’ve met 503 (Service Unavailable) error many times when using “.nyud.net:8090” as you will see below. Sometimes the proxy server may block images which linked from a different site, it happens. So I also recommend you to prepare all these goods for keeping your pleasure in surfing, some ways will be work for other sides at the same time, yet some maybe just fit in browsing blogspot.com, you’ll find.

1. “Ultrasurf 6.9”, a popular tiny soft developed by Ultrareach.Net, it’s a dynamic proxy hunting application provide fast, transparent, and encrypted access to the internet. It hunts for three available proxies at the same time, and you can easily switch between one and the others by mouse clicking, without change the proxy configuration in IE setting. The 6.9 revision is the latest version for IE, if you’re using a “Firfox” or “Opera” browser like me, set the proxy server address to 127.0.0.1 with a 9666 port number, after you lunch Ultrafurf. Many bloggers have mentioned this way and I first found it on WebLeOn's Blog, which giving an extension for my Mozilla Firefox browser to access blogspot.com and typepad.com directly from my “right-click” menu but not type a “.nyud.net:8090” postfix every time. Coral CDN provides some other useful plugins for “Searching” and “Book marking”. If a Chinese interface will be your prefer, WebLeOn has been so kind to rework and publish a Chinese version. If you are using IE explorer, my suggestion will be give it up and switch to Firefox, or you can still using your IE but add “.nyud.net:8090” behind the site’s URL in the IE address bar. Almost every day, we face to the pressure, worry, and other negative emotions, more or less. Maybe the guys like me who running self business face more. It may not be helpful if you try to escape from these emotions, or simply tell yourself to be positive. Negative and positive are a coin’s two sides; they come together with our choice for life. The first day I chose to found my own company, then means I chose more fortune (maybe) and more pressure and challenges. Negative emotions come because you chose the other side of the coin. Am I happy for my choice? Yes, I am. So, I will enjoy the elements which my happy choice brings in my life, maybe positive, maybe positive.

I am not talking about how to handle pressure here, you cannot handle pressure, and the only way you stay with it is the only way you stay with your fortune. What’s the way you stay with your fortune? Enjoy it. Yes, so if you can enjoy your fortune, vice versa. Until now, people do not prove whether fortune brings the pressure or pressure brings the fortune. Remember they’re the two sides of a coin, yes?

Lawyer letter from the bank?

I extended credit to nearly 11,000 last 3 month, because of the buzi travel; the bank doesn’t have a branch in the city where I am, so the bill stays up to now. The bank mentioned about the bill several times in different way, by sms, by phone, by mobile, and this time, by lawyer letter. It’s lucky I don’t leave an email address on my account profile, otherwise, it’s not a surprise they send tons of email for me. I have though about transit the bill for them by my online bank, but I have to provide the bank’s branch address where I create my account. Every time the bank phoned me, I asked for their branch address, -- they didn’t know! Ha, it seems they are absorbed in asking me to pay my bill, but do not care about how I could pay my bill for myself. The sms messages are also funny, “PAID THE BILL BACK, PLEASE!!!” Woo, are they shouting on my screen?

OK, this is the bank! They entice you expand your overdraft, so that they make large amount of incoming from the highly interest. But at the same time, they are scared about you don’t repay the money. I am not criticizing their model for margin, I am just think they should pay more attention in taking care of their client while swindling high level margin from them. If they think a lawyer letter would handle everything, let me say, go ahead.

Once, they make me to be sick of their 9:00 am, 11:45am, and 2:30pm calling only for the money.

I start to fight back: “Well, How can you say these words, SIR? I wonder where your wage comes from. It absolutely comes from the accrual I pay for the credit card every month. Yes, I have arrearage, but you account my arrearage by highly interest at the same time. A Time tagged "beta"

Go to google, it's easy to find such many "beta" tags on the site. Gmail "beta", Google Reader "beta", Google Talk "beta"........everything on google tagged "beta" except search engine and blogger, oh thanks god. Well, Ceta may doubt if these are “beta" services or google is just simply a "beta" company? Woo......some guys think google is the god of the internet, if both of the above are approved, can we make a further conclusion that the internet we're connecting on is just a "beta" programme? And how many percents of your life rely on it, that means how many percents of your life is a "beta". It may be an afflictive word. But just search around on the other sites, flickr "beta", msn messenger "beta", Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware "beta".

A time tagged "beta" has come, and may we should develop the new living skill in this new age. When every little thing filled in our life has been tagged "beta", maybe you could call it “Ceta's time age”. :D I also tried a "beta" post yesterday, which used "U" instead of "you" and "U'r" instead of "your", but as you're reading this, I give it up. :)

Every time I developing my new skill on things, I change my view and feeling first, in order to face them fairly. If the "beta" tag makes me uncomfortable, that’s because I identify it as a semi finished article and full of bugs. Think a little deeply, "beta" tag give me no sureness. How to make a break through? -- Re-identify the “beta” tag. The main reason make this popular "beta" tag is nothing but speed, the internet offer the speed for it. Internet is a lab for fangled testing, it provides million of Connors for your fangled, it maybe the fastest way to find out the bugs, and consummate your service by publishing your fangled on the internet for frees (trying for free). It's so fast as to forget picking off the "beta" tag. An idea is converting to be praxis in internet speed. You don’t even need a “beta” code or something, just an good idea, publish to the net, buildup a project, other people will provide you the code, suggestion, and even funds you may need to develop the project.

Then what's the new qualification for a "beta" age? What I do is just simply tagging myself a "beta". When you want to do studies in new fields, are you still planning, discussing, designing, and then make an action schedule? You may do these except you could finish them all in a day. If you insist to the flow processing just as what you are doing in the 4 years college days, forget them all, and just do it. Otherwise you may found the fields are completely disappearing or nothing like what it formerly being when you finish all of your researching. Learning will not be an isolated processing any more; learning will be an integrated processing through out designing, implementation, operation and optimization. You cannot stop learning in this process as you can learn nothing before you start to “beta” this process.

Sham Links vs. Virtual Links?(SL)

Let's continue our talking about sham-link and virtual-link, today is sham-link's turn.

Think about a scenario as this.
U'r Company has chosen MPLS/VPN service for connecting the abroad branches from the service provider, and use OSPF as the routing protocol. While at the same time U suggest that the company should also buy a E1/T1 link, act as a backup path for the MPLS/VPN. This ensure the high available for U'r network. So, the gateway router will be connected to the SP that offers U MPLS/VPN service. And this gateway router, we call it Customer Edge (CE) router, and the link is a primary link for data transmission. Then the router which U'r SP used to connect U'r site we call it Provider Edge (PE) router. Don't forget u'r backup link, the CE router may connected to another or the same SP, but a different WAN service -- E1/T1. U design the CE router will retain the communication with the remote site through this backup E1/T1 even if the MPLS/VPN service is down somehow. This backup link is known as backdoor path.

Although OSPF PE-CE connections assume that the only path between two client sites is across the MPLS VPN backbone, backdoor paths between VPN sites may exist. If these sites belong to the same OSPF area, the path over a backdoor link will always be selected because OSPF prefers intraarea paths to interarea paths. (PE routers advertise OSPF routes learned over the VPN backbone as interarea paths.) For this reason, OSPF backdoor links between VPN sites must be taken into account so that routing is performed based on policy. Now this is why we talking about sham-link here.

At this moment, U'r CE router may received two kinds of routes to reach the remote site,
1. Received from the MPLS/VPN that redistributed from BGP to OSPF, this route create U'r primary path, and flood as LSA3 (inter-area) route.
2. Received directly form the remote site router by the E1/T1 backdoor path, this route create U'r backup path, and flood as LSA1(intra-area) route.

Unexpected situation happens, the primary path and the backup path changes their role because OSPF prefers intraarea paths to interarea paths as we explain above.

If the backdoor links between sites are used only for backup purposes and do not participate in the VPN service, then the default route selection shown in the preceding example is not acceptable. To reestablish the desired path selection over the MPLS VPN backbone, U must create an additional OSPF intra-area (logical) link between ingress and egress VRFs on the relevant PE routers. This link is called a sham-link.

Note: A sham-link is required between any two VPN sites that belong to the same OSPF area and share an OSPF backdoor link. If no backdoor link exists between the sites, no sham-link is required.

Because the sham-link is seen as an intra-area link between PE routers, an OSPF adjacency is created and database exchange (for the particular OSPF process) occurs across the link. The PE router can then flood LSAs between sites from across the MPLS VPN backbone. As a result, the desired intra-area connectivity is created by specify a lower metric for the sham-link, than which is specified for the backdoor path.

In summary, U should configure an OSPF sham link under the following circumstances:

* Two CE routers are linked together by a Layer 3 VPN.
* These CE routers are in the same OSPF area.
* An intraarea link is configured between the two CE routers.

If there is no intraarea link between the CE routers, U do not need to configure an OSPF sham link.OSPF treats the link through the Layer 3 VPN as an interarea link. By default, OSPF prefers intraarea links to interarea links, so OSPF selects the backup intraarea link as the active path. This is not acceptable in configurations where the intraarea link is not the expected primary path for traffic between the CE routers.An OSPF sham link is also an intraarea link, except that it is configured between the PE routers. U can configure the metric for the sham link to ensure that the path over the Layer 3 VPN is preferred to a backup path over an intraarea link connecting the CE routers.

Sham Links vs. Virtual Links?(VL)

Well, several weeks ago, Ceta joined an orkut community in which talking about OSPF networking. One of the topics is discussing the different between sham links and virtual links in OSPF network implement or designing. ha, in fact, they're totally different solutions for different networking design, so it's not comparable between SL and VL. I should reply the post except that there's handicap in posting figures on orkut. So, let me explain the detail below, and wish "Pankaj" will see my blog here.

Can anybody give me some idea about the difference between OSPF sham link & virtual. I mean in which scenario sham link is used & in which virtual link is used. What LSA type is flooded over a sham link & what LSA type is flooded over virtual link.

Virtual Links comes the first part: All areas in an OSPF AS must be physically connected to the backbone area (area 0) or area 0.0.0.0 if you configure your network on Juniper Routers. Unfortunately in some cases where this physical connection is not possible, you can use a virtual link to connect to the backbone through a non-backbone area. At the same time, you can also use virtual links to connect two parts of a partitioned backbone through a non-backbone area. So, there’re two functions of VL in all. I emphasize here because so many engineer ignore the second one in their work, and this may cause a sub optimized solution which created two different OSPF processes for each backbone area, then make an inter-process redistribution in order to received complete route from both sides. Further more, the area through which you configure the virtual link, known as a transit area, must have full routing information. The transit area cannot be a stub area. In this example, the virtual link connects area 7 to the backbone through area 5:

A virtual link is created between the routers with router ID 1.1.1.1 and router ID 2.2.2.2:

After the VL has been established, routes from area 7 should be transit to the backbone area by the VL, vice versa. Now, I would like to do a further explanation about VL here, because "Pankaj" mentioned about the LSA type in his post. The question is “what is a Virtual Link in fact?” or “can we solve the problem without a virtual link technology? Let’s disconnect the virtual link first:

As soon as you issue this commands, the routes from area 7 now disappear on the backbone routers. Then, we create a tunnel between R1 and R2, and we put the tunnel in the OSPF backbone area, let’s see what will happen:

Now, a tunnel is created between R1 and R2, then we find the flow instances:
1. R1 and R2 establish a new neighbor ship with each others, by the interface “tunnel 0” which is the virtual interface we created above.
2. R1 changed it's role from an internal router to both of an ABR and a Backbone Area Router. Note, R1 was not an ASR before, though it connects both area 5 and area 7. The router which connects backbone area and other area(s) is defined as an ABR, a router will not be defined as an ABR unless it connects the backbone area, no matter how many non-backbone area it has connected.
3. The most important, all route generated from area 7 now has been advertised to the backbone area now, vice versa.

I think we could make a summary here, a virtual link actually is a tunnel which fall in the backbone area, and expand the backbone area to a router which is not connected directly to the backbone area, then make the isolate router an ABR. Only ABR would generate LSA3 to the the backbone area. So, OSPF floods LSA1 in the tunnel or we call it virtual link customarily to build the neighbor ship and make itself an ABR, then flood LSA3 to the backbone. I will talk about sham-links next time.
